Mineral Sunscreen

Mineral sunscreens, also referred to as physical sunscreens or chemical-free sunscreens, contain the sunscreen filters zinc oxide and/or titanium dioxide, which are known to protect from both UVA and UVB sun rays. Mineral sunscreens mainly work by sitting on the top layer of the skin and acting like a shield to deflect the sun’s rays.

Mineral ingredients sit on the top layer of the skin and mainly function by deflecting UV rays from entering the skin. On the other hand, chemical, or organic, sunscreens are ingredients that mainly absorb UV rays.

The advantage of mineral sunscreens is that they work as soon as you apply them to the skin, whereas chemical sunscreens containing organic ingredients must be absorbed, which means you need to apply at least 15 minutes before sun exposure. Another advantage is that they are less likely to be irritating and as a result, are ideal for those with sensitive skin.

Dermatologists often recommend mineral sunscreens for those with sensitive skin because they are typically less likely to cause skin irritation, skin reactions and breakouts.

When choosing a sunscreen for children, it is always best to look for products labelled suitable or safe for children – these sunscreens come in both mineral and chemical formulas.
